Embedding Leadership Principles via Executive Coaching

The Context

We worked with the second largest healthcare provider of private health insurance in Ireland with more than half a million members. They have over 600 employees and an annual turnover in excess of €80m.

The Challenge

The client requirement was to build on the efforts of the senior management team to create and embed a set of leadership principles. The leadership group had spent the previous six months in a formal learning programme where these principles were considered, debated and adopted

Prism was asked to build a coaching approach which would ensure that each of the 22 members of the senior team would reflect on how they were embedding these values, and how they could continue to do so.

Elements of individual choice and programme oversight were also noted as key requirements.

The Approach

Prism worked closely with the CEO, the Senior Management Team, and key HR personnel to understand the approach required. The Prism team, led by the Prism Coaching Lead, designed an implementation programme consisting of the following elements:

  • Half day workshop on “Stepping into Coaching” – the workshop was aligned to the leadership principles to optimise understanding, engagement and enthusiasm for the process, ensuring maximum return on investment. The full Prism coaching team was in attendance at workshop.

  • Participant ‘Choice of Coach’ process was implemented and concluded in-session

  • Coaching programme consisted of four sessions, including goal-setting with individual line managers

  • A review of coaching was conducted at the midway point of the programme with coaching team to analyse progress

  • Programme was completed with a participant evaluation of the programme which incorporated alignment with the leadership principles

Sustainability

Prism created an online scheduling and monitoring tool which was populated by the Coaching Team and visible to the client, as well as to the Prism Coaching Lead. There were formal and informal meetings with the client to ensure that the programme was delivering on set out KPIs. A formal survey was conducted at two-thirds of programme completion to gauge the participants experience and progress to date.

Finally, two formal review meetings concluded the programme to assess the inclusion of the leadership principles and identify anonymised themes emerging from the coaching.

The Impact

The programme has had an attendance rate in excess of 95%. The programme feedback survey found that 89% of participants rated it as ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’

I found the coaching programme very stimulating; it pushed me to think about what I really want and to plan for my next steps.

The coaching programme made me think about how I add value, the impact I have on others and the importance of listening. It provided the space for me to think about how to build strong, trusting relationships and to see situations from the shoes of others. It forced me to consider how my skillset and experience can be leveraged to enable the business to achieve its ambitions.
